AUGUST 80 Marathon Run in Archival Documents, 30/88 and 30/207
Below you can find the documentation on the AUGUST 80 marathon run. These papers are part of the collection of the Social Committee for the Construction of the Monuments to December 1970 Victims in Gdynia (No. 30).
The run was organized by: the Social Committee for the Construction of the Monuments to December 1970 Victims in Gdynia and the Paris Commune Shipyard in Gdynia. Józef Kuczma was a Chairman of the Organizing Committee. The AUGUST 80 marathon run took place on the 15th of August 1980. The run began at the to the Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers in Gdańsk. The finish line was at the Monument to December 1970 Victims in Gdynia.
Among the attached documents there are the statutes of the run and the decision of the Gdańsk City Council allowing for it. There is also a list of prizes and sponsors for the AUGUST 80 marathon run. Below you can also find an invitation to the AUGUST 80 run and its program. Furthermore, there is a poster with the run’s route, and a leaflet template containing acknowledgements, and a poem titled “The Marathon Runner.”
Interesting as well is the list of all the runners and the results they achieved, and the announcements read at the beginning and the end of the race. The other noteworthy documents include the incoming and outcoming correspondence of the Social Committee for the Construction of the Monuments to December 1970 Victims in Gdynia. The letters focus on organizational aspects of the marathon run, like assuring the presence of emergency medical services. The requests for funding are also attached. Moreover, there are letters from various factory committees of the Solidarity Trade Union, and from private people, as well as thank you letters.
