Records related to Norway in the Historical Archives of the National Commission of the Solidarity Trade Union

Since February this 2024 we have been presenting archival materials connected with international cooperation of the Solidarity Trade Union. In previous months we shared selected materials related to Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Japan and Germany. This time we would like to focus on records related to Norway.

In the Historical Archives of the National Commission materials related to Norway are to be found in the following fonds and collections (i.a.):

  • National Coordinating Committee and the National Commission of the Solidarity Trade Union in Gdańsk,
  • National Executive Committee of the the Solidarity Trade Union,
  • Coordinating Office Abroad of NSZZ “Solidarność” in Brussels,
  • Pennants collection of the National Commission’s Historical Archives.

Below you can find digitized documents from the Congress of Landsorganisasjonen (LO, Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions) – the most significant, central organization of Norwegian trade unions – which took place on May 3-9, 1981. They include i.a a text on Norwegian trade unions and their attitude to Poland and to the Solidarity Trade Union. Also attached is an annual report on the activities of the Norwegian-Polish Solidarity, prepared by information secretary Jarosław Pawlak.

Greetings for Polish workers sent at the end of 1980 seem also very interesting. The letter is signed by the chairman of the club at Nyland Vest (the largest shipyard in Norway), chairman of the club at Fabritius (the largest printing house in Oslo), leader of the 1980 bus drivers strike in Oslo and the region, and others.

Worth noting is a proposed declaration of the Norwegian-Polish Solidarity Initiating Committee from November 1980, addressed to Lech Walęsa.

Among the attached materials there are telex messages, e.g. an invitation from the Solidarity Trade Union to the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions for their first official visit in Poland on February 23-24, 1981.
